Collaboration Overview
About Students
- Work in small teams (typically 3–5 per team)
- Engage directly with industry partners as clients
- Design and implement solutions using modern frameworks, version control, and Agile practices
- Communicate their progress weekly through demos, reports, and presentations
About Program Goals
- Translate complex client needs into well-scoped, technically viable project plans
- Design and implement a machine learning-powered software solution using industry-standard tools
- Demonstrate iterative development through Agile practices, including demos, backlog refinement, and testing
- Communicate clearly with technical and non-technical stakeholders through documentation and presentations
- Collaborate as interdisciplinary teams to evaluate design alternatives and make ethical, informed software decisions
About the Collaboration Format
-
Multiple perspectives per project: Each project benefits from the insights, creativity, and technical solutions of several independent student teams.
-
Peer comparison and innovation: Teams working on the same challenge often take different approaches, enabling industry partners to compare diverse solution paths.
-
Iterative engagement: Projects evolve over 15 weeks, with weekly check-ins, demos, and deliverables to guide refinement.
- Faculty-supported execution: Each team receives guidance from faculty and engages regularly with the industry partner to ensure alignment.
Benefits for Industry Partners
Student teams design and build working software prototypes that demonstrate practical approaches to the problem you present. These may include machine learning models, dashboards, web applications, or other technical tools depending on the project scope.
Because several independent student teams work on the same project challenge, industry partners benefit from diverse technical approaches and design strategies. This enables partners to compare architectures, algorithms, and product concepts that address the same problem from different perspectives.
Students bring current knowledge of modern frameworks, open-source tools, and machine learning techniques, often exploring innovative approaches that organizations may not have had time to test internally.
Industry partners have early visibility into Bowie State’s graduating computer science students, creating opportunities to identify strong candidates for internships, contract work, or full-time employment.
Projects are structured to require only about one hour per week of industry partner engagement, while faculty oversee the academic rigor and CapSource coordinates logistics.
Each team produces tangible outputs including:
- Working prototypes
- Source code repositories
- Technical documentation
- Architecture diagrams
- Final presentations and demonstrations

| About Students |
Students participating in this program are senior computer science majors in their final semester at Bowie State University. They have completed advanced coursework in software engineering, machine learning, artificial intelligence, systems architecture, and cybersecurity, and are now applying their skills in a capstone experience designed to simulate real-world software consulting. Students are expected to:
They are experienced with tools such as Python, GitHub, Angular, Slack, UML, and cloud-based design systems, and are excited to tackle machine learning and AI-driven challenges with real-world impact.
Student Level: Bachelor Degree Student Time Commitment: Full Time Team Structure: 4 - 6 |
|
| Program Goals | By the end of this capstone experience, students will be able to:
Each project is expected to culminate in a functioning prototype, GitHub repository, and formal presentation to faculty and industry stakeholders.

| Format Title | Capstone | |
| Format Description | The Senior Capstone in Computer Science at Bowie State University is a structured, semester-long applied research and software development experience that serves as the culmination of students’ undergraduate education. In Fall 2025, the course will focus on two distinct industry-partnered projects, with the entire class divided into multiple teams, each tackling one of the projects. This unique format ensures:
Each team produces its own set of deliverables — including source code, documentation, presentations, and demos — all targeted at addressing the same core project challenge from different angles.
|
|
| Benefits For Industry Partners | Organizations partnering with Bowie State University gain access to a highly motivated team of senior computer science students who are eager to apply their technical training to meaningful real-world challenges.
Prototype Development and Technical Exploration Student teams design and build working software prototypes that demonstrate practical approaches to the problem you present. These may include machine learning models, dashboards, web applications, or other technical tools depending on the project scope.
Multiple Solution Pathways Because several independent student teams work on the same project challenge, industry partners benefit from diverse technical approaches and design strategies. This enables partners to compare architectures, algorithms, and product concepts that address the same problem from different perspectives.
Fresh Perspectives on Emerging Technologies Students bring current knowledge of modern frameworks, open-source tools, and machine learning techniques, often exploring innovative approaches that organizations may not have had time to test internally.
Access to Emerging Technical Talent Industry partners have early visibility into Bowie State’s graduating computer science students, creating opportunities to identify strong candidates for internships, contract work, or full-time employment.
Structured Innovation with Minimal Time Commitment Projects are structured to require only about one hour per week of industry partner engagement, while faculty oversee the academic rigor and CapSource coordinates logistics.
Deliverables that Support Real Decision-Making Each team produces tangible outputs including:
These deliverables can provide valuable starting points for future internal development or experimentation.
